A Purrfect Life

written by Jenny James

At last, they’re awake! Listen, voices. Xak is talking to Mumm. It must be morning but it’s still dark. Whatever, its time to get me out of here.
“Good morning! May I please come out now?”
Good, they’ve stopped talking. You'd think they'd let me out first before having their morning chat.
“Hello? Can you let me out please? In here! Let me out… please!”
Ooooh!!! Purrfect! The door is moving, so now they'll let me out.
“Hello Xak. No, no, no, I don’t want to stay in with you, I want to go out. I want to sit at a window and watch the world go by. I want to run, chase, play.”
I want… hmmm. I want to play with those funny looking mice in that box of water. That'd be fun! Purr, I wish I could do that. I would get wet but it'd be worth it. If only I could catch one.
“Are you going out now? I’m right behind you. Hey, Xak! Didn't you hear me?” Hummf. He's shut the door and I'm on the wrong side of it. Again.
They've got to let me out soon. It's not as dark anymore. I'll have a nibble of breakfast and a drink. Maybe they'll let me out if I do that. Yum. Purr. I must say, they do give me tasty snacks to eat.
“Hello? I've had breakfast now. May I PLEASE come out and play? I want to see what's going on outside. The noises sound so interesting. Hello? Xak? Mumm? Are you there?”
I know they’re up. I can hear Xak's little black box that he holds all the time. It makes the weirdest noises. High pitched beeps and blips, not a friendly sound at all. I don't know what he holds it for and he pushes me away when all I want is a look. He won’t let me touch it, ever.
I'll try them again, maybe they didn't hear me.
“Xak, Mumm? May I come out and play please.” Nothing. Great. Even being cute and adorable isn’t working. What now?
“Hey people!?! Look, I've been waiting since forever and all I want is to get out. Let me out. I want to get out. Let me OUT NOW!”
The door’s moving again. And about time too. “Thanks Mumm… Hey, don't do that. I don't want to be picked up. Put me down. Let me go!” Don’t they know what time it is? Places to go, things to chase.
“Don't think I'm going to thank you, Mumm. It's taken till the sun's up in the sky before you answered me.”
Finally. I’m out. They took their time. I should try for the door that leads to where the great smells come from. Hmmm. Maybe later. Now, where's that box of water?
